House Removals

Our wonderful and highly skilled team has over twenty years of experience moving our clients to and from homes of all sizes

We offer full packing, part packing and a move-only service, room-by-room installation and specialist wrapping for artworks and valuables

Many of our clients come to us through word of mouth, for us this is the very best compliment on what we do.

No challenge is too large or too small for experienced our team. We can wrap for you, pack for you, build for you, do pretty much anything apart from decorate! We will deal with what feels like the most insurmountable tasks, making your move as straightforward as possible. We are as comfortable and careful handling an antique tall boy as we are a garden trampoline.

What’s important to our team is not what we do, but how we do it. Our personal service and loyal team has earned us a reputation for efficiency, friendliness and reliability. Every client receives the same level of care and courtesy, from our team in the office and initial consultation, through to the end of the move and beyond.

Moving done differently.

We know how stressful moving can be and we want to help take the strain. We offer practical advice, help you plan for the big day and fix problems if and when they arise. Little touches make the difference and we never leave without everything being where it needs to be, and the beds built ready for your first night in your new home.

Whether you need a man and a van for a day, or a full team to support you on a larger move, we can help.

From our base in Charlbury, we are perfectly placed to service clients throughout Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds – but you will also find our trucks in London, throughout the UK and Europe.

Common Questions About Moving House

Below, we have answered some of the most common queries we receive about our removals service. If there is anything else you would like to know, our friendly office team is always at the end of the phone.

How far in advance should I book my house move?

We recommend getting in touch as soon as you have a target completion date, ideally 4 to 6 weeks in advance. However, we know that property chains can be unpredictable and dates often shift at the last minute. We always remain as flexible as possible and will do our very best to accommodate shorter notice periods.

How much extra is it for a full packing service when I move house?

Generally it costs about a third of the removal charge. We can do a more simple China & Glassware pack and you do the rest, this will normally cost you a lot less.

What delivery options do House & Carriage offer?

At House & Carriage we can tailor the delivery option to suit your needs. We can do everything from a budget ‘Threshold’ delivery to our more usual ‘White Glove’ bespoke service.

For a threshold delivery we deliver to ground floor only, no unpacking and get a signed delivery receipt.

For our white glove service we deliver to room of choice, unwrap and set the piece up, remove all packaging and get a signed delivery receipt.

All deliveries are pre-booked and confirmed with recipients. For a delivery solution to suit you why not call one of our team.

Do you dismantle and reassemble furniture?

Yes, absolutely. Our team is fully equipped to carefully dismantle large or awkward items like wardrobes, dining tables, and beds. More importantly, we never leave your new property without ensuring your beds are built and ready for your first night in your new home.

How many boxes do I need?

Nearly everyone underestimates the number of boxes that they will need. Typically a four bedroom house will need 70-80 boxes. The kitchen uses the most boxes, with the average being 15.

Can House & Carriage supply packing materials?

Yes, we will generally deliver them to you a few weeks before your move, or you can collect from us. If we are packing for you we will bring everything that we need on the day.

Can I buy packing materials from House & Carriage?

We have a full range of packing materials for you to buy. Everything from boxes to bubble, paper to film and everything else in between. You do not need to be moving with us to have access to our materials. Simply call one of our team or drop in and have a browse.

Is the quality of packing materials important?

If there was one piece of advice we would give to everyone it would be: ‘Don’t scrimp on your packing materials!’. These are your possessions, often collected over a lifetime, so why would you buy cheaper, lower grade packing materials to move everything in? Our packing cartons are double and triple walled and made from good quality kraft paper and we have a full range of other materials to pack every item imaginable.

Remember – If you’re buying cheap materials there is a reason they are cheap. And what ever you do – do not be tempted to raid the local supermarket for their old boxes. They are very light in construction, designed for single use and definitely not for your valuables!

What about my attic?

Attic spaces are the great unknown! Unless we have specifically quoted to clear your attic it will generally be your responsibility to ensure it is empty before your move. But that is not to say we can’t and won’t do it so please do mention it when we are quoting for your move.

Do you offer a Man & Van type service?

As well as offering bespoke moving solutions, we can also do a ‘2 man & Van’ service for the more budget conscious client. Hourly rate work and fix-price rates are available on request.

Are my goods protected whilst in transit?

We are able to protect your goods with MoveProtect. MoveProtect is our agreement to accept an enhanced limit of liability up to the Maximum Replacement Value of your goods. By agreeing to our terms and conditions, declaring your value to us and paying any MoveProtect fees, we agree to accept liability for any unlikely damage to your goods while in our custody and control. Please see the dull details in the attached Addendum or speak to us for further details.

"I wanted to pass on our biggest thanks to you (Tom) firstly and Amy, for the kindness and calmness you showed us after we were badly let down by the other removal company last week it truly did help us in what was an already highly stressful time. But our biggest thanks and praise for your removal team - Joe, Reece, Danny and Patrick who were outstanding. Their professionalism and understanding of what we wanted was second to none. They were an absolute pleasure, and made the day go very smoothly for us."

"I was very happy with service from House & Carriage both on the phone and in person. Its been 26 years since my last move and I don’t plan another but …..never say never, if I do you will be top of my list! Adam, Harry, Danny, Tom & Patrick packed the house contents on very hot days; then delivered my stuff to my new home via storage. Polite and efficient, they really did get on with the job!"
